The Aspiro Wilderness Adventure Therapy Program

The program uses a mix of conventional clinical modalities which include experiential education and therapy; family systems; adventure therapy; and wilderness therapy. The participants are exposed in a therapeutic experience which uses intense life issues processing, self-efficacy building experiences, and conventional talk therapy.

Aspiro encourages participants to discover their real potential and search for their own “heart of peace”. The Wilderness Adventure Therapy is divided into 3 apparent elements:

  • Wilderness: The activities are based in outdoor living where the participants learn the simple backpacker’s life which teaches them to rediscover themselves, reevaluate their goals, and become self-reflective. Each participant can experience the holistic approach to healing which include regular physical exercise, education, journaling, stress management skills, relaxation, and nutrition.
  • Adventure: The activities are centered in canyoneering, backpacking, mountain biking, and rock climbing which are proven to be instrumental in achieving the desired therapeutic results. Participants learn to overcome learning differences, eliminate addictive patterns, resolve conflict and create parental trust.
  • Therapy: The participants participate in group and individual sessions which are facilitated by licensed and experienced therapists, who address each of the participants’ specific needs. Parents are also enjoined to participate in the trail activities for a few days.

The Aspiro program lasts for seven to twelve weeks with a participant staying in the program for an average of 54 days. The Aspiro experience starts with Transition Camp for two to five days which teaches the new participant some essential skills prior to moving to the program’s expedition phase. The therapeutic expeditions combine theories and research from Solution Focused Therapy; Self Efficacy Theory; Sequencing in Adventure Therapy; Conscience Use of Metaphor; Positive Psychology; Self Determination Theory; Character Development Theory; and Anatomy of Peace.

Most of the programs listed on this website are not regulated by the federal government, and many are not subject to state licensing or monitoring as mental health or educational facilities, either. A 2007 Report to Congress by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found cases involving serious abuse and neglect at some of these programs. Many programs advertise on the Internet and through other media, making claims about staff credentials, the level of treatment a participant will receive, program accreditation, education credit transfers, success rates, and endorsements by educational consultants. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, cautions that before you enroll a youngster in a private residential treatment program, check it out: ask questions; ask for proof or support for claims about staff credentials, program accreditation, and endorsements; do a site visit; and get all policies and promises in writing.
