Leadership is not something that is often taught, especially when it comes to children. Some people just naturally fall into leading roles, but it stands to reason that the more you educate a child on the key qualities of a good leader, the better off the future ought to be. So, contrary to popular belief, leadershipcan be taught to children, at least in part through the use of a few strategies and considerations.

Lead a Potential Leader

Leaders are often taught their strong and natural qualities from seeing this example in other people. If you host these qualities in yourself, you should be able to impact those people that you’re around. So perhaps before you attempt to teach children how to be leaders, you should assess whether or not you currently can offer them a reasonable example to mirror as they grow into future leader. If you determine that you are not the best current example, it might be time for you to start growing as well.

What Qualities Are Needed?

You shouldn’t think of every leader as having all of the same set of qualities, since every person is different and unique. There are overlapping traits that can seemingly be considered universal though. One such trait is honesty. The most respected leaders throughout history were straightforward and honest. Integrity and trustworthiness are some things that are hard to coach. Rather they are a way of living life where people can trust that you are doing what is best for them, because you have an established track record of making beneficial decisions for the group.

Help Them To Find Their Place

People who are just drifting around without a sense of purpose will rarely, if ever, take charge. You have to show your children where they fit in and help them to understand the world around them as completely as you can. The more they understand, the better suited they will be to look at the world in a positive manner and find a productive way to engage themselves within it. The less they’re allowed to learn often means the more negatively they will respond and act.

Identify Their Talents

Some children are unaware of the skill sets that they have, because no one has taken the time to identify and exercise them. Take time with a child to learn what they are good at in terms of social interaction, problem solving and general interaction. Some might be very good at speaking publicly, while another might shine at solving complex problems. It’s different for each child, and helping them play to their strengths can help them feel more comfortable in leadership roles in the future.

These are just a few ideas that can help you to teach a child about leadership. Surely there are other strategies as well, but this is something that can help you understand your role in the development of leadership knowledge, as well as what kind of behavior to encourage in each child to get on the right path.

Most of the programs listed on this website are not regulated by the federal government, and many are not subject to state licensing or monitoring as mental health or educational facilities, either. A 2007 Report to Congress by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found cases involving serious abuse and neglect at some of these programs. Many programs advertise on the Internet and through other media, making claims about staff credentials, the level of treatment a participant will receive, program accreditation, education credit transfers, success rates, and endorsements by educational consultants.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, cautions that before you enroll a youngster in a private residential treatment program, check it out: ask questions; ask for proof or support for claims about staff credentials, program accreditation, and endorsements; do a site visit; and get all policies and promises in writing. Click here for questions to ask before you enroll your child in any program.

The Crosswalk Teen Shelter program was established in 1985 to provide immediate shelter, life changing and lifesaving programs, and prevention program for school dropouts. More than 1,000 youths are served each year. The shelter program caters to adolescents, aged 13 to 17, who have histories of parental substance abuse, rape, or sexual abuse, high risk of suicide and depression, mental health dilemmas, substance abuse, lack of education, and family conflict.

The program encourages and restores each homeless youth so that he/she accepts personal responsibility so that he/she can return to his/her families eventually. Some of the services offered are family reconciliation services; personal hygiene products, showers, and clothing; job placement assistance and employment readiness program; self-sufficiency, and life skills classes; bonding and attachment classes your young parents; Head Start onsite program; mental and medical health care; school dropout prevention; substance abuse prevention and treatment; enrichment and tutoring activities; donor funded college education opportunities; transportation; and admission to the transitional living programs.

Crosswalk prospers because there are businesses, families, services clubs, and churches, which help it. These groups provide meals for the youths on a daily basis. Enrichment and tutoring services are provided by community volunteers. There are also donors who give financial support, scholarship funds, and in-kind services.

Drug or alcohol addiction can be a serious problem that can ruin a person’s life. Fortunately, though, there are ways an addict can kick the habit once and for all, especially through participation in sports. If you or someone you love needs help for a drug or alcohol addiction, this help can be found by replacing drugs or alcohol with sports. It does not matter what type of sport you or your addicted loved one chooses to partake in because any sport can provide a way to escape the cycle of addiction. In case you need further convincing, here are five ways sports can provide rehab from a potentially deadly drug or alcohol addiction.

1. Focus

Becoming skilled at a specific sport requires a lot of attention and dedication to the sport of choice. When you place all of your attention on a sport, you will have less attention to spare on drug or alcohol abuse.

2. Time

A drug or alcohol addiction can take up a lot of an addict’s time. Between thinking about the harmful substance, figuring out how and where to buy the substance, and using the substance, an addict fills up a lot of his or her time with addiction. Instead of focusing all this time on a harmful substance, a sport can help fill up that time in a more healthy way.

3. Relationships

When a person plays a sport that involves teamwork, this can help build strong relationships with teammates. This in turn can give a person a strong support system. When a person has a strong support system, he or she is less likely to fall back into the harmful pattern of substance abuse. The friendships formed from using sports as a form of drug or alcohol rehabilitation can help an addict maintain sobriety.

4. Self-Esteem

Drug and alcohol can completely ruin a person’s self esteem, and playing sports is a self esteem builder. When harmful drugs and alcohol are replaced by playing a sport, an addict can become more confident. This in turn can help stop an addict from going back to these harmful substances. If you are addicted to drugs or alcohol, playing a sport can help give you the self esteem you need to become a stronger person. When you are a stronger person, the lure of drugs or alcohol will not seem so powerful anymore.

5. Sobriety

Unlike drugs and alcohol, playing a sport can help make you healthier. While drug and alcohol abuse can contribute negatively to your health, playing a sport can help your body becoming healthy. Plus, the feel good hormones released by playing a sport will give you a health high that drugs and alcohol cannot.

These are the five ways that sports can help provide the potentially life saving rehabilitation you or a loved one needs from drugs or alcohol. Once an addict replaces drugs or alcohol with sports, he or she will almost instantly begin to see just how much better life can be when it is a life without harmful intoxicating substances. This is why playing a sport can be a great way to kick a potentially life threatening drug or alcohol addiction.
