The Ali Forney Center Housing for Homeless LGBT Youth
What Is Ali Forney Center?
Ali Forney Center provides social and health services, as well as shelter, to homeless youths who are lesbians, bisexuals, transgender, and gays. It caters to youths who are between 16 to 24 years old and are residing in New York City. The center was named after Ali Forney, a queer youth, who was homeless and dedicated in championing the rights of other people like him. He was an HIV prevention worker up to his death in December 1997. He was brutally murdered on the streets of New York.
The center provides care such as psychological and medical care, substance abuse treatment, job assistance, education, counseling, guidance, mentoring, and vocational training. The housing programs are divided into two: transitional and emergency. Established in 2002, the center has more than 200 volunteers and 73 professional staffs. The center offers 50 beds for youths who come to stay for the night and four apartments for those who wish to stay for a longer time. The day centers in Brooklyn and Manhattan receive many youth visitors each day.
The Ali Forney Center Programs
The Ali Forney Day Center offers referral, employment assistance, showers and food, mental health treatment and assessment, HIV testing, primary medical care, case management, and street outreach while the Emergency Housing Program has sites in Brooklyn and Queens and provides temporary housing where each LGBT youth can stay for a maximum of 6 months while the center assists him/her in searching for permanent housing.
The center is Transitional Housing; on the other hand, it has four sites all over Manhattan and Brooklyn and offers housing for an LGBT youth for a maximum of 2 years. While in transitional housing, the youth is prepared to independent living by equipping him/her with the necessary skills. Some youths continue their education while others gain employment while in the program.

A 2007 Report to Congress by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found cases involving serious abuse and neglect at some of these programs. Many programs advertise on the Internet and through other media, making claims about staff credentials, the level of treatment a participant will receive, program accreditation, education credit transfers, success rates, and endorsements by educational consultants. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, cautions that before you enroll a youngster in a private residential treatment program, check it out: ask questions; ask for proof or support for claims about staff credentials, program accreditation, and endorsements; do a site visit; and get all policies and promises in writing.
