While it is important to be friendly and sociable with your children, you also need to command their respect. Sometimes, you need to be a child’s parent and not his or her friend, and this is where leadership qualities are so important. If you want to make sure that your child respects you and the role that you play in their lives, you need to be a leader, so consider some of these all-important tips.

* Be Upbeat

The best leaders are ones that both encourage good morale and who can instil it in others. Children learn from example, and you need to give them a great example of being regularly pumped. This does not mean that you need to put a smiling face on everything. Life is sometimes rough and scary, but you should always evidence the ability to cope with the issues to the best of your ability. Be positive and you can help your children feel faith in your decisions.

* Be Fair

Good leaders never play favourites, though they do reward extra effort that has been put in. While you should not need to justify your decisions to your children, it is a very good idea to explain them to your children. For example, if one child is more responsible than the other and has shown good behaviour in the past, it is completely acceptable to give that child more privileges.

* Have a Good Work Ethic

One thing that brings many people to resent the people above them is the perception that that person is lazy. Children are no different in this regard. If they perceive you as being lazy, they are going to feel that they have every right to be the same. If you want your children to have a great work ethic, make sure that they see that you do as well. This does not mean that you need to be working all day. To the contrary, regular breaks will make a huge difference in your time with your kids. Just make sure that they know that you can put your nose to the grindstone!

* Be Consistent

While you should always be willing to take responsibility and admit when you were wrong, consistency teaches your children to trust you. For example, if you are constantly letting your children get out of their responsibilities, they will think that they do not have to perform to high standards. Instead, be willing to be consistent when it comes to the decisions that you make with your parenting. Be firm, and remember that rules are in place for a reason. This is something that can take some time to learn, but it helps your children recognize you as a leader and as someone that they can trust.

Parenting is not easy and at the very least, it will keep you on your toes. If you want to make sure that your children respect you, it is important to be someone who is worthy of respect. Work on your leadership skills to make sure that your child respects you!
