What Successful Parents Know about Leadership

When you are going about your day to day parenting duties do you ever wonder what exactly does it mean to be a parent? This article digs deeper into this ongoing discussion about why we parent, and what our purpose is as parents in society today.

There are lots of ways a person who has a natural talent for leadership can be described, they have a dominant personality, they march to their own beat, etc. However you describe them, you know at least one person whether it is yourself, your boss, your child, or someone else in your life that is a born leader. What does leadership have to do with parenting though? I may watch too much Dog Whisperer and World’s Strictest Parent but when I compare Ceasar Millan with the parents on the show World’s Strictest Parent I see many similar qualities, these people are all leaders. Now I know children are not dogs but leadership is something found in all social mammal groups.

So what qualities do leaders have that make them successful parents. I have compiled a list of ten top leadership traits for parents:

  1. Trustworthy
  2. Self-Awareness
  3. Goal Oriented
  4. Motivating
  5. Able to Delegate
  6. Able to Communicate Effectively
  7. Optimistic
  8. Committed
  9. Consistent
  10. Sense of Humor

As I continue my discussion about parenting I will explain why each of these traits are imperative to successful parenting. I will also discuss how to improve your leadership skills. So if this topic interests you be sure to check back next week for our discussion on trustworthiness. Did I miss a leadership trait you think makes a successful parent?
