The Children’s Cabinet – Nevada
What Is Children’s Cabinet?
Children’s Cabinet was founded in December 1985 through the efforts of Michael Dermody, who wished to bring together business leaders and public officials in order to find solutions to the needs of children in a community. It is a nonprofit organization, which looks into the dilemmas facing children and their families and search for ways to foster innovative responses to solve these problems.
Children’s Cabinet has different programs such as Join Together, The Nevada Public Health Foundation, The Children’s Cabinet in Incline Village, the Adolescent Health Clinic, Reach for the Academic Difference Tutoring and Truancy Prevention, Family Counseling, and Parenting Education. The above programs either have been turned over to various public agencies or have been organized into separate nonprofit, private organizations.
The Children’s Cabinet Programs for the Abducted, Runaway, and Homeless Youth
One of Children’s Cabinet programs for these youths is the Safe Place, which a nationwide program those youths in crisis in Northern Nevada. First established in 2003, the program partners with area businesses in order to offer safe places where the youths can go. The staffs are trained to offer a safe place for the youth and have access to case managers of Children’s Cabinet. They cater to those teenagers who have been forced out of their homes or are on the run. The Drop-In Center of Safe Place is a place where the youths can visit after school. In the Drop-In Center, the staffs can talk with those teenagers and run projects with them. The teens are encouraged to join in different activities like discussion groups.
The Runaway and Homeless Youth Mentoring and Equipping program, popularly known as RHYME, offers help to those youths who have runaway, are contemplating running away, or who have been forced out of their homes by family members. They can stay inside the campus of Children’s Cabinet while the case managers strive to unite them with their families or search for a safe location where they can live. The Nevada Child Seekers, on the other hand, is a program, which targets to protect children and help the abducted, missing, or runaway kids. The program offers the parents some fliers, which they can distribute, and it acts as liaison between the family and the police.
The Shout Out Loud and Netsmartz aims to protect children from kindergarten to grade two. These kids are taught to become aware of their surrounding so that they will be safe. The Netsmartz program, on the other hand, is an internet safety program for kids. It also offers identification kits for kids where their parents can have them fingerprinted. Street Outreach is part of the services of Children’s Cabinet for homeless and runaway youths who do not know anything about the organization. Information about Safe Place and RHYME are distributed so that other youths will find out about the programs. Street Outreach also offers warm clothes, clean underwear and socks, hygiene kits, and food packets.
